dad just sent this. I'm pretty sure at this point the car is trying to tell him it's done. (Clutch blew up a month or so ago, and now this)

How does this make any sense?
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:12 |

Yep, that doesn't look good at all and but does look costly.

Something done broke

because Saab. Seriously, after over 20 years of always having Saabs in the family, nothing surprises me anymore.

:(
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:16 |

but how does something like that happen?
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:16 |

Fuckin' Saab, man.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:17 |

oh, that's a given.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:19 |

that is a suspension over haul on that corner....

At this point I no longer feel bad because he's dumped about $7k into it since May. There WAS a beautiful '84 Monte Carlo Lowrider for sale in the area, and I offered give him the Pilot if he bought it for me, but instead he payed more than what it was for sale for for a clutch and bushings.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:21 |

Best to get him to cut his losses and get shot quickly.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:23 |

seriously, because Saab. Mine had a problem where it wouldn't go into 5th or Reverse because somehow the shift linkage was LONGER than it was supposed to be. Just decided to grow one day.
Fuckin' Saab.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:25 |

at this point, he's probably bought it about 3 or 4 times, and I'd be surprised if NOW he decides to dump it. (Just spent $5500 getting stuff fixed not even a month ago.)

"I'm no expert, but I think something may have broke."
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:31 |

I did something similar to my mom IS250 a while back (dont ask...) it was like 1250 to replace everything.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:32 |

Saad.
I'd give the Car Guy's advice. Have his mechanic go through it and see what it takes to fix everything wrong with it. If it's 2-4 grand, he will probably be happy to drive it for the next couple years. If it's 10 grand, then, as they say in Boston, it's 2 in the hat.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:33 |

At this point, I just wish he'd take up a less damaging-to-him hobby, like Heroin.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:36 |
|
meh. it IS a viggen, id be doing everything to keep that thing on the road. Same way guys dump 20K into a resoration of an old mustang or something.
I'm curious as to HOW it go damaged that way. either something major failed, or he wacked it pretty fcking hard against something.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:36 |

oh no no, he already did that last month. Payed $5500 to have almost every broken thing except the A/C and right rear window regulator.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:37 |

Control arm bolt snaps, control arm bushing is totally shot, or control arm breaks.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:39 |
|
It's gotten to the point that he can't even pay rent due to the money he's dumped into it. He's been putting around a grand a month into it, not including gas, insurance, and basic maintenance.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:39 |
|
There you are - get an estimate on the other stuff, and he'll be happy because everything works. Until it doesn't again ... but that's hopefully years away instead of weeks.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:43 |

heh heh heh. Try days. He just had the drivers window, clutch, bushings, exhaust, rear wiper, and several oil leaks fixed. It hasn't even been a month.

!!!!!
that thing was abused.... I've never heard of a saab taking THAT much to maintain....
![]() 11/30/2014 at 15:53 |
|
not really. it has one previous owner, an airline pilot, and when my dad bought it it only had around 80k on the clock.
And you didn't hear it because Saab owners will never admit it. My family has owned a bunch of saabs, and let me tell you, this is about par for course.

My last car before I moved here was a '97 SHO. In nearly 100K nearly nothing broke - mostly the 6 CD player in the trunk - it went through 4 of those, all replaced under warranty - blame JBL, not Ford. More than any other car, I wanted everything working all the time. Had a guy at the dealer who kept me happy and saw to it that I spent no more than at a private shop. He loved that car, but had too many cars (said his wife) to buy it when I sold it, so CarMax.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 16:13 |

huh. ours never had many issues. turbo went out at 150K km, and the SSID unit was diing...but nothing more.

Did the shock tower mount break loose? The geometry looks totally off.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 16:30 |

It really shouldn't be that hard of a fix. I know things seem to be breaking now, but the car is fairly old now, and its coming the time wear items are gonna wear, but if you fix it properly you'll have a car good for many miles in the future for much much less then the price of a new car. Looking at what the wheels doing, Im pretty sure thats just a normal Macpherson strut on those, so its probably a ball joint or a broken control arm. If its the control arm its usually only about 4 big bolts holding it on, and you can pick them up new for about 100 dollars if you know where to look. So maybe a few hundred, once you factor in an alignment?

If he's had suspension work done recently the tech may have screwed up. If something was that close to breaking, it's possible the tech should have seen it, but not necessarily. As we say in my shop " Johnny's (bad tech) got a boomerang (comeback)".
![]() 11/30/2014 at 16:48 |

I...uh.....what?
What exactly is going on here? I've never seen anything like this.

Mine hasn't had many issues either. It sucks that Ben's dad had to dump $7k into such a beautiful Viggen over the last year.
Here's a rundown of the cost to keep my 9-3 on the road over the last year:
Full synthetic oil change — $85
Tire rotation — $10
$7,000 vs. $95. Either his dad has a lemon, or he needs to stop beating on it so hard. But it's not fair when people bring the whole brand down, while my Saab has 275,000 miles on it and drives wonderfully.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 16:58 |

yea...my dad had his from 2002 (i think) to 2010. racked up 200k km on the dot.
he left the car to me. its been sitting in a field ever since because I cant afford insurance on it.
I want to either bring it back and DD it, or lemons it. I cant bring myself to scrap it.

I can't bring myself to get rid of mine either, and this is my third Saab. My 9-3 has been so good to me I'm reluctant to let it go.

My neighbor replaced the DIC on his Saab 9-3 over the summer. The other day his check engine light popped on. 4 codes. DIC. AGAIN....

Ooohhh Viggen, nice and broken. How fast does it go from 0-Sludge?

Reminds me of a former coworker who owned a '92 Jeep XJ that knew no limit to the money it could eat. An actual conversation:
Our boss: You need to get rid of that thing.
Coworker: I can't afford to get rid of it.
Boss: You can't afford NOT to get rid of it.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 21:55 |

Wow you managed to mention the ONE thing that hasn't happened to it.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 21:56 |

That sucks DIC.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 22:04 |

huh.
'94 9000 Aero- clutch, sunroof stuck open, various leaks, turbo went
'94 900- RUST. WHEEL BEARINGS. EXHAUST LEAKS. Threw a rod
'87 900S- leaky trans (like a quart of fluid a week), fuel pump, seat got stuck.
'01 9-5- auto trans grenades
'93 900S- incredible growing shift linkage, alternator, head gasket
'02 Viggen- everything but sludge.
I like saabs, but damn. My family has had SHIT luck with them.

lol V8 SHOs were on his short list if he was gonna get rid of the saab
![]() 11/30/2014 at 22:15 |

the viggen is being a typical Saab and having really obscure but specific issues.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 22:22 |

He could do a lot worse - mine was dead reliable but for a couple minor issues. Never left me stranded. Don't let him buy one with those awful chrome wheels. Cloth seats are rare, but more comfortable than the leather in my experience - mine was silver w/ grey cloth. The Yamaha heads were complex, but reliable. I really have no buying advice, except my usual - take it to a mechanic and have him go through it. It's a great GT car - I spent a couple 7 hour stints behind the wheel, and never got tired.

Looks like a CV Axel or control arms. That's what my 9k looked like after it clipped a median.

Ouch. Sounds like an intervention is needed. The term flogging a dead horse comes to mind.

that is why you can but 90's 93s and 95s for 1000 bucks right now. because their owners are tired of fixing them.
